Red Cross assists 30 displaced after Smyrna apartment fire

The Greater Atlanta chapter of the American Red Cross is working with about 30 residents who were displaced after a fire broke out at a Smyrna apartment complex on Thursday.

Allison Flexner, spokesperson with the American Red Cross, said volunteers responded just after the fire happened to hand out toiletries and supplies to people who were displaced and provide resources to help them get back on their feet.

"It's just something to get them on the road to recovery," Flexner said.

The Red Cross will continue to monitor the displaced residents, Flexner said, and has assigned each person a case worker to connect them with housing, food and other resources in wake of the fire.

A total of 12 units were damaged in the fire, which broke out Thursday afternoon at the Concord Crossing Apartments along Old Concord Road, just off South Cobb Drive.

No injuries or deaths were reported, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.

It's the second fire that's happened at the complex this year, with a fire in February killing three people and displacing another 30.
