$132,000 in scholarships awarded to children of TSYS employees
Credit-card and payment processor TSYS on Monday announced recipients of its annual scholarship program, and the grand total this year is $132,000.
The money — managed through the TSYS Future Scholars Foundation Inc. — goes to 48 students whose parents are employed at the high-tech firm across the U.S. Of the 48 recipients, 34 reside in the Chattahoochee Valley region.
The top student this year, who is dubbed the Richard W. Ussery Scholar, is Rachel Spencer, the daughter of Mark Spencer, an employee at the company’s South Center in Columbus. Rachel received the highest cumulative score from the foundation’s judges. Ussery is a retired chairman and chief executive officer of TSYS.
The scholarships are funded through the donations of TSYS employees and “friends of TSYS,” the company said. That includes fund-raisers and activities throughout TSYS. Since 2008, the foundation has doled out $894,750 in scholarship funds to 562 students who are judged in the areas of leadership, awards and honors, community service, involvement in activities, career goals and academic ability.
