Callaway Gardens closes to clean up after Tropical Storm Irma

Callaway Gardens, the nature resort attraction north of Columbus, said Tuesday it has closed to clean up and make certain the grounds are safe following Tropical Storm Irma, which moved through the area on Monday.

The gardens, located in Pine Mountain, Ga., hopes to open Friday, if possible, although that could change depending on cleanup progress, said Rachel Crumbley, director of gardens experiences.

The golf courses at the gardens are tentatively shooting to reopen Thursday, however, while some dining and shopping locations operated by Callaway Gardens, including the Country Kitchen and Store off U.S. Highway 27, will be closed until power is restored.

Owned and operated by the non-profit Ida Cason Callaway Foundation, Callaway Gardens amenities include golf, bicycle and walking trails, fishing ponds, a manmade lake and beach, a butterfly conservatory, a discovery center and a chapel.
