Business

In the mood to break stuff? Then head down to this new Columbus business.

Nestled off Macon Road near Flat Rock Road in Columbus is a new business that invites people to come relax and break items like dishes and bottles.

“You get tired of doing the same things in Columbus,” Erica Lark, owner of Temper Tantrum, said, sitting behind a large wooden desk with baseball bats, golf clubs and jumpsuits nearby.

The idea behind Temper Tantrum is simple. Anyone 18 years of age or older, not pregnant and wearing closed toed shoes is allowed inside of the garage-like room full of alcohol bottles, televisions, plates and even a car — all ready and waiting to be destroyed by customers.

The walls are alternating shades of teal and red, spray painted with words and phrases (many of which are not safe for work). During a session, Lark allows customers to listen to their own playlist or listen to one of hers while breaking items.

Lark hopes that those who come to Temper Tantrum finds it stress relieving. Lark is particularly aware of stress, as she recently left the Army in July.

“I know the stresses of the military and I have an adrenaline rush every so often. To me, I feel like (Temper Tantrum) is a good way to give back to the community,” Lark said. “Instead of punching your wall at home that you’re going to have to pay for and patch it yourself, you can just come here and break stuff.”

It’s been nearly a year since Lark was learned what a “rage room” is, which is what Temper Tantrum is modeled after.

Lark was in Charlotte, North Carolina, looking to do something different outside of a normal date night. A quick Google search introduced her to a rage room called the House of Purge.

“That was the first time I had ever heard of a rage room, see a rage room, everything. We went in there and was able to smash a car and break a lot of things,” Lark said.

She kept in contact with the owner after her experience. When she later decided against going back to college, she had the idea to start her own rage room in Columbus.

“I got out of the Army in July and decided to move back to Columbus, as this was my first duty station. I dropped back out of school with only a few classes left for my degree and then I was like, ‘Okay. This would be the perfect time to try and start up the business,’” Lark said.

Initially she thought it would take about a year to get everything up and running. Much to her surprise, she was able to complete steps like obtaining the building and registering the name in October of this year. Lark officially opened the business on Dec. 1.

Temper Tantrum offers four services, all of varying features and prices.

Tantrum A costs $35 and allows one person in the room for 15-30 minutes. While in the room, the person can break 15 small items, such as glass cups and plates, as well as one medium sized item, such as a printer.

Tantrum B costs $55 and allows two people to go in the room for 15-30 minutes. They have the option of breaking 15 small items and two medium items, or a car if it’s available.

BYOS, which stands for Bring Your Own Stuff, costs $25. One person can go inside of the room for 15-20 minutes and break whatever they bring.

Finally, there’s the Super Tantrum option that costs $100. Up to four people can go inside of the room for 20-30 minutes and break 15 small items per person, as well as a medium sized item, or smash a car if it’s available.

No matter what option a person chooses, Lark will clean up the mess afterwards. Temper Tantrum, 6270 Crystal Drive, will be open from noon to 10 p.m. every day except Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

So, why the name Temper Tantrum? Lark said she went through a few names before one finally stuck.

“You’re going in there and it’s kind of like you’re having a fit. As soon as you hit one thing, something takes over your body,” Lark said. “It’s kind of like you’re having a temper tantrum. Then I said, ‘Boom! Temper Tantrum.’”
