Columbus company breaks ground on new $9 million apartment complex

A $9 million project is set to add 80 apartment units to north Columbus.

The complex will be located at 7697 Kayne Boulevard, just north of the Mercedes-Benz dealership off Veterans Parkway. Representatives with Flournoy Construction as well as the property owners, Investors Management Company of Valdosta, held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday on the property.

The apartment complex, to be named Highlands at Kayne Boulevard, is expected to be completed by the end of the year according to Scott Mullen, vice president and group manager with Flournoy Construction.

“There will be four buildings on site, three of which are three-story, one is two-story,” Mullen said. “One of the buildings will house a community building, leasing office. There will be a community garden accessible for all the tenants and kind of connected throughout with sidewalks.”

Columbus Mayor Skip Henderson, District 10 at-large councilor John House and Brian Sillitto, executive vice president of economic development with the Greater Columbus Georgia Chamber of Commerce, were present at the groundbreaking, along with other Flournoy Construction and IMC representatives.

Mullen said the site was identified as being in a growing and convenient area. The property is located less than a mile from access to I-185 and J.R. Allen Parkway, and just north of Whittlesey Boulevard, a primary north Columbus shopping destination with a large collection of retail stores and restaurants.

IMC owns two lots at the location and may develop the second later on, he said.
