Downtown Columbus doughnut shop closes down due to COVID. It might not be gone forever
A doughnut shop in downtown Columbus that opened just before the coronavirus pandemic has closed its doors.
Restaurateur Mark Jones confirmed the closure of Flip Side Donuts & More, 1115 Broadway, on Monday. The space is now listed for rent.
Jones said the restaurant, due to its location, depended heavily on foot traffic. With COVID-19 largely reducing that, the decision was made to close up shop.
“Without the foot traffic downtown, it made it hard to stay open,” Jones told the Ledger-Enquirer. “Restaurants depend on foot traffic and people coming to see us.”
Jones said the shop will “probably return” in the future, just at a different location.
The restaurant opened its doors in January 2020 with something that no other downtown business was offering: made-to-order mini doughnuts.
About the size of a doughnut hole, the doughnuts were fried and topped with everything from classic glazes and cinnamon sugar to more adventurous creations like Fruity Pebbles and peanut butter and jelly.
Jones has owned restaurants in Columbus and Harris County since 1995, and currently owns or co-owns Smoke Bourbon & BBQ, The Black Cow, Plucked Up Chicken & Biscuits, Hunter’s Pub and Mark’s City Grill.
The now-for-rent space is located in the center of the 1100 block. Across the street, the former Lane Jewelers building is getting a complete remodel, and several storefronts stand empty on both sides of Broadway. A Salt Life retail store, Freeze Frame Yogurt Shoppe, Brushes and Beverages, Crowne Hookah, and longstanding businesses and sandwich shops round out the block’s offerings.
