Grocery store chain ALDI is opening a second location in Columbus.

The store will be located in the vacant space between AutoZone and Roses at Midtown Shopping Center on Macon Road, according to Morris Ewing, Sr. of Ewing Southeast Realty, a real estate company based out of Atlanta.

The store will be located next to AutoZone and occupy 22,400 of the available 46,624 square feet, Parker Johnston, a Waddell Holding Co. commercial sales and leasing executive who assisted in the ALDI deal, said. The approximately 23,000-square feet remaining will be located between ALDI and Roses.

MidTown Columbus, Inc. announced the news Sept. 29 in a Facebook post.

“It’s too soon to tell when they will open, but we’ll keep you posted!” the post reads.

An ALDI spokesperson did not respond to L-E’s questions. Instead, the L-E was provided a statement from Shaun O’Keefe, Jefferson Divisions (Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina) vice president for ALDI:

“Thanks for your interest in ALDI. We are excited to confirm we are planning to open a new store in Columbus, Georgia, in 2022, but do not have further information at this time. We will reach back out once we have more specific details.”

MidTown Inc. Executive Director Julio Portillo did not respond to the questions before publication.

Midtown Shopping Center has several vacancies, including a 2,137 square foot space next to Ross and several lots behind the shopping center, according to a marketing brochure from Retail Leasing Advisors.

Columbus’ first ALDI location, 6301 Veterans Pkwy., opened in November 2015.

The retailer is known for its cost efficiencies, which include stocking some brands specific to the ALDI chain, selling fewer items to choose from compared to large supermarkets, and prompting customers to insert a quarter into a shopping cart to use one, then getting the coin back when they leave the food market.

The Macon-Warner Robins area has two outlets, while the Atlanta metro area has more than 40 food stores. Across the Chattahoochee River, Phenix City has one location at 3670 Marketplace Drive.

Editor’s note: The size of the new ALDI store as well as its location within Midtown Shopping Center has been corrected.
