What’s that huge crane building in downtown Columbus? Images of plans released

So this is what that humongous crane is building on the empty lot next to Country’s Barbecue in downtown Columbus.

Images of the next two phases of a mixed-used development overlooking the Chattahoochee River have been released.

The W.C. Bradley Company’s plan for Phases 3 and 4 of Riverfront Place, 1301 Broadway, comprise a multistory office building, a multifamily residential building and retail space on the vacant land between 13th and 14th Street.

W.C. Bradley vice president for construction services Michael Webb submitted the documents to the Columbus Consolidated Government for approval by the Uptown Façade Board. The board is scheduled to meet at 3 p.m. Friday in the first-floor conference of the Government Annex Building, 420 E. 10th St.

Phases 1 and 2 of the development produced The Rapids apartments and Hotel Indigo across Front Avenue. Phases 3 and 4 are envisioned to maintain “the streetscape continuity with entry and retail components of comparable scale to the context with modulated storefronts and complimentary materials throughout,” the company says in its description.

“Traditional materials,” such as clay brick with accents of steel, stucco and precast concrete will be used in the construction to “evoke the industrial heritage of the local vernacular,” the description says. “A variety of glass storefronts brickwork and canopies continue the uptown character for the pedestrian experience while complimenting a large portion of the Riverwalk area and further enhancing the Columbus Uptown area and experience.”

The renderings are by the architecture firm Rule, Joy, Trammell and Rubio of Atlanta.

W.C. Bradley also is constructing a parking garage on the site.
