Gas prices are still at their highest across the country. Now more than ever, it is crucial to research the best deal and save money where possible.

According to AAA, the national average is $4.32, while the Georgia state average is $4.28. This comes just a few days after Georgia shattered its past record for the highest state average.

A recent survey from AAA found “that two-thirds of Americans felt gas prices were too expensive just a few weeks ago at $3.53 per gallon. Now with the national average at an all-time high of over $4, Americans may have reached a tipping point. Over half (59 percent) said they would make changes to their driving habits or lifestyle if the cost of gas rose to $4 per gallon.”

Maximizing savings is always a good idea, but what are some ways to save at the pump? Here is what we found:

1. Safe driving

Be sure to slow down and practice safe driving habits on the road. This is not only to keep you and other drivers safe, but it also highly influences your vehicle’s gas mileage. According to fueleconomy.gov, “Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. It can lower your gas mileage by roughly 15 percent to 30 percent at highway speeds and 10 percent to 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic.”

2. Make sure your vehicle is up to date with servicing and maintenance

Failing to regularly service your vehicle can risk many issues. It is important to have routine inspections completed to ensure proper tire inflation, oil and air conditioning units, as all of these affect your gas mileage and can cost much more in the long run.

3. Be strategic with travel

Check news and GPS apps for the best route. Getting stuck in traffic or accidentally taking the long route could seriously hurt your mileage rate. Also, be sure to combine errands and limit unnecessary trips to the grocery store; a detailed grocery list may come in handy and help you stay on track.

Carpooling is another wise travel tip; gather your neighbors together for morning/afternoon school trips or ask your coworkers to start carpool Fridays. It’s worth a shot–and it could save you a few bucks.

4. Download gas apps

Technology has its pros and cons, but one huge pro? Technology can save you money! Several free apps in Apple and Android app stores can benefit your bottom line. GasBuddy, AAA and GPS apps are just a few that offer valuable information when searching for the best deal or advice on saving a few dollars at the pump.

5. Sign up for fuel point programs

Grocery stores such as Kroger and Sam’s Club allow shoppers to use fuel points as discounts at the pump and in stores. For some, there are membership costs, but others are free and ready to use. Even major gas brands like BP and Shell have fuel rewards programs available.

6. Fill up earlier in the week

Gas is at its highest demand during the weekend, when people are ready to go out of town. So, why not fill up earlier in the week? GasBuddy found that gas prices are the most affordable on Mondays, with Sundays being a close second. Gas prices are at their highest on Thursdays and Fridays. While this fluctuation is just a few cents a gallon, it is worth avoiding the crowds and starting the week off strong.
