Georgia gas prices increased sharply this week. Will cost keep rising into summer?
Gas prices have spiked 11 cents per gallon in the last week, inching closer and closer to March’s record high.
According to the AAA index, Georgia’s average gas price is $3.79. Here in Columbus, the current average gas price is $3.76, a nine cent compared to last week’s $3.65.
Patrick De Haan of Gasbuddy.com said Georgia is one of only 15 states with average gas prices below $4 per gallon. He expects the increases to start slowing down again soon.
“I think we’re somewhere in the 7th inning stretch.”
As of Friday, the average price for gas in the Peach state was $3.79, well below the national average of $4.27 per gallon. Alabama’s gas is slowly creeping up, averaging $3.95 per gallon, a rise of 12 cents in the last week. Nearby Lee and Russell counties may want to consider filling up in Georgia. Muscogee County’s average is a whopping 20 cents cheaper than Lee County and 23 cents less than Russell County.
Nearby Stewart County has one of the highest averages in the state, $4.01. Only one county (Taliaferro) had a higher average price, $4.03.
Here are the average prices for regular unleaded fuel per county in the Columbus area, as of 3 p.m. Friday:
Muscogee County: $3.76
Chattahoochee County: $3.79
Harris County: $3.79
Troup County: $3.79
Meriwether County: $3.81

This time last year, gas prices were $2.73 per gallon in Georgia. Experts say a variety of factors could keep gas prices high for the next few months, including summer tourism and ongoing tension with Russia over the invasion of Ukraine.
