Columbus-based Synovus Bank announced a leadership change Friday.

Heath Schondelmayer has been appointed as CEO of the bank’s West Central Georgia and East Alabama Division, effective June 1. He also will continue as Columbus market president, his position since January 2017.

Schondelmayer succeeds Mark Lane, who is scheduled to retire May 31 after 32 years with Synovus, including 10 as a division CEO. Lane will remain on Synovus’ Columbus Advisory Board following his retirement.

“Heath is an exceptional banker and leader with a wealth of experience and personal knowledge related to the region’s industries and economic development opportunities,” Wayne Akins, Synovus chief community banking officer, said in the news release. “We will miss Mark and appreciate his many contributions to our company, and we are beyond confident in Heath’s readiness to take on this expanded role leading our strong regional team serving Columbus, LaGrange, Dothan, and Enterprise.”

Schondelmayer joined Synovus in 1997. He has nearly 25 years of banking experience, including commercial lending, private wealth management, new business development and team building. He serves on the boards of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Chattahoochee Valley, Columbus Development Authority, Greater Columbus Chamber of Commerce, Brookstone School and St. Francis Emory Healthcare. He also has helped lead the Columbus 2025 initiative for growth and economic prosperity in the region.

Schondelmayer graduated from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in finance. He earned a master’s degree in business administration from Columbus State University, and he graduated from the Stonier Graduate School of Banking at Georgetown University.
