The new Hampton Inn opened in downtown Columbus. Here’s what residents should know
Though it took two years to build and pandemic-related issues slowed progress, the new Hampton Inn in Columbus was already completely booked when it opened its doors on Feb. 8.
Despite supply chain problems and a shortage of labor, the hotel opened strong and expects to contribute to Columbus’ overall downtown tourism industry.
“Our contractors were having issues finding people to work,” said Cassie Meyers, director of marketing and public relations for Valley Hospitality, a Columbus-based hotel and food management company that owns and operates the Hampton. “Which kind of delayed our progress. So, we’re just kind of at the mercy of the world post-COVID. Once we got over the hump, they really put the pedal to the metal in order to be able to finish.”
Despite the setbacks, the Hampton opened to a sold-out house, she said, because of ThesCon2023 and a swimming tournament that took place the week the hotel opened its doors. The hotel being able to provide 93 more rooms in Uptown Columbus will help local event centers, like the Trade Center, have the ability to sell larger conventions, Meyers said.
“It makes us excited,” she said. “It makes the staff excited. They like life in the building. It makes it fun.”
The Hampton Inn’s presence should continue to contribute to Columbus’ tourism industry, Meyers said, and be an option for local residents who are looking for a staycation. The hotel is family-friendly, she said, and the indoor pool is a good option to give kids something to do no matter what the weather is like outside.
Because it is located downtown, Meyers said, guests can take advantage of the number of restaurants, shops and bars that are nearby.
“We’re so centrally located that you can really get anywhere,” she said. “We’re not that far of a walk from the RiverCenter or the Springer.”
Tables and seating areas on the first floor allow guests to work or lounge while staying somewhat private, said Meyers.
“(Travelers) might just be getting back into traveling for business,” Meyers said. “But they’re still working while they’re at the hotel. If they’re out not doing a meeting, they don’t want to stay in their room. This offers a really cool environment for people to be able to continue to work.”
The hotel has five floors and is located on the corner of 12th Street and Broadway. Visitors have access to an indoor swimming pool, valet parking, complimentary breakfast and workout facility.
The Hampton is not Hilton’s luxury brand, Meyers said, but it does provide people with the best bang for their buck.
“It’s smaller. It’s a little less expensive than those full-service hotels,” she said. “But you’re still getting so much for that nightly rate. And I think that really helps set us apart. And I think it’s something that guests notice too when they stay here and are happy.”
