Tenant leaving MidCity Yards. Columbus developer answers why. What’s next for that space?
Fetch Park, a social hub for dogs and people, is closing its Columbus location, ending three years in the city.
The Atlanta-based business announced the news Tuesday on the Facebook page for its Columbus location.
No reason nor date for the closing was included in the announcement, but The Cotton Companies president Chris Woodruff, the developer of the MidCity Yards mixed-use complex containing the Fetch Park Columbus location, told the Ledger-Enquirer the last day Fetch Park Columbus will be open is Dec. 29, and he provided this response to explain the decision:
“The closure of Fetch Columbus comes as part of the natural evolution of the MidCity Yards development and as a joint decision between the Landlord and the Tenant,” Woodruff wrote in an email to the Ledger-Enquirer. “That being said, Fetch’s presence in Columbus was based on a lease agreement that had multiple trigger points — it had the ability to be relatively short (3 years) or had the opportunity to extend longer up to a certain time period.
“As the area transitioned into its next phase of growth, and as the first trigger point surfaced, the Landlord and Fetch Park, LLC felt it was the right time to move forward with new opportunities.”
Woodruff added that The Cotton Companies didn’t oppose Fetch Park’s decision.
“In the minds of everyone involved, this closure, while bittersweet, aligns with the overall vision for MidCity Yards — a vision of continual innovation and growth,” he said, “which is why MidCity will continue evolving as a dynamic, multi-functional space for the Columbus community.”
Asked whether Fetch Park wasn’t making enough money in Columbus to stay here, Woodruff said, “My understanding is that Fetch Park was profitable at this location.”
Woodruff declined to specify what’s next for that space.
“There are future opportunities in the works for areas at MidCity Yards,” he said. “When information is at a point where it can be publicly released, we look forward to discussing details with you.”
MidCity Yards has the following tenants in its building at 1421 Sixth Ave., next to Fetch Park:
Admission to Fetch Park, an off-leash dog playground with a bar for people, is free for people — and a dog doesn’t need to accompany them — but admission for dogs ranges from a daily $15 option to monthly and annual memberships.
