Winn-Dixie closing 2 local supermarkets, 1 in Columbus and 1 in Phenix City. What’s next

Two locations of supermarket chain Winn-Dixie are closing in the Chattahoochee Valley.

Southeastern Grocers, the parent company of Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s Supermarket, confirmed to the Ledger-Enquirer that Winn-Dixie locations at 4231 Macon Road in Columbus and 3952 U.S. Hwy. 80 in Phenix City will close in late April and mid-May, respectively.

“We recognize the impact this decision has on our associates, and we are fully committed to supporting them through this transition,” Meredith Hurley, senior director of communications and community at Southeastern Grocers, said in a statement emailed to the L-E.

In the statement, Winn-Dixie also said affected employees will be able to transfer to open positions at neighboring stores. Employees who do not want to transfer will receive severance.

Last month, Southeastern Grocers announced their business has been sold to a consortium of private investors from their previous owner, Aldi. This sale includes 170 grocery stores in Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida, according to the news release.

Anthony Hucker, CEO of Southeastern Grocers, will serve as the CEO of the new group. Their news release says the consortium immediately assumed day-to-day operations of the Winn-Dixie grocery store. The company also previously announced it will convert 50 Winn-Dixie and Harvey Supermarket locations to Aldi locations.

A company spokesperson confirmed these closings are not related to the Aldi store conversions.

“Our focus remains on ensuring the long-term success of our business and continuing to provide the high level of quality and service our customers expect and deserve.” Hurley said. “We will work through this process with care, and we are grateful for the support and understanding of our valued associates, customers and communities.”

The Phenix City Winn-Dixie was the last of the chain in the city. Columbus will have one Winn-Dixie open at 6770 Veterans Parkway.
