100 jobs coming to Columbus. What we know about this major employer
A major employer is setting up its Columbus location.
Sigma Plastics Group, a plastics manufacturer based in Pompano Beach, Florida, is opening a facility on a 21.97-acre lot at 7679 Chattsworth Road. The company is operating under the subsidiary company name, Sigma Stretch Film of Georgia, in this new expansion. The facility’s construction begins in late July.
When the Ledger-Enquirer originally reported this news July 10, the Development Authority referred to this project as the Omega Plastics Corp. investment. The inducement agreement document obtained by the Ledger-Enquirer also named the company as Omega Plastics Corp., based in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Missy Kendrick, CEO of Choose Columbus, confirmed Tuesday with the Ledger-Enquirer that Omega Plastics is a subsidiary company of Sigma Plastics Group.
The project is expected to cost $39.2 million to complete, according to Kendrick at the Development Authority of Columbus July 10 meeting. The company will be looking to fill 100 jobs, Kendrick said.
Job opportunities include skilled manufacturing, maintenance, quality assurance, logistics and administrative support, according to the news release. Hiring will begin early next year.
“This new location in Georgia fills a geographical need for our stretch-film division and demonstrates Sigma’s commitment to help grow our customers’ businesses by investing in assets that will help us lower our cost to service,” Mark Teo, CEO and President of Sigma Plastics Group, said in the news release.
This facility will be the company’s second in Georgia. The other facility, Tara Plastics, is in Forest Park, Georgia.
The project includes a 75,000 square-foot expansion of an existing facility that formerly housed Stalwart Plastics, and the construction of a new 75,000-square-foot warehouse, according to the press release.
The development authority unanimously approved the inducement agreement for the Sigma Plastics project in April. The bond resolution was delayed until the authority’s June meeting.
