Over 30 Winn-Dixies set to close. Are stores in Georgia affected?

Southern Grocers (SEG), parent company of Harvey’s Supermarket and Winn-Dixie, announced Tuesday that several stores across Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, and Mississippi will close in a new effort to prioritize its Florida market.

Thirty-two Winn-Dixie stores and eight Harvey’s Supermarkets will be impacted by this transition, according to the press release. Store closings are expected to be completed by the end of this year, with banner transitions being completed by early 2026.

“For a century, Winn-Dixie has proudly called Florida home,” Anthony Hucker, chairman and CEO of Southern Grocers, said in the press release. “Our story is built on the resilience and spirit of its people, and that foundation will guide our future.”

This transition will close the last Winn-Dixie in Columbus, located at 6770 Veterans Pkwy. It will also close the Winn-Dixie locations at 1441 Fox Run Parkway in Opelika, Alabama, and 1055 S. Eufaula Ave. in Eufaula, Alabama.

SEG Grocers confirmed in an email statement sent to the Ledger-Enquirer that these closures will affect 80 employees across all markets.

“We recognize that these changes affect people first, and our top priority is supporting every associate through the transition,” Meredith Hurley, senior director of communications and community at Southeastern Grocers, said in the statement. “Many of the stores are being sold to retailers with similar grocery models, which means they’ll have comparable staffing needs to serve their customers. We’re working closely with each buyer to ensure a smooth handoff and to provide associates with the opportunity to be considered for open positions under the new banners, where available. Every impacted associate will be treated with the care, respect, and support they deserve, and eligible associates who are unable to secure a position with the new owners will receive severance.”

Winn-Dixie stores will continue operating in South Georgia with locations in Brunswick, Folkston, Lake Park, St. Simons Island, and Valdosta, according to the press release.
