How the mass closures of GameStop stores are affecting Columbus locations

The nationwide trend of GameStop closures has reached Columbus.

The GameStop store in Peachtree Mall, 3131 Manchester Expressway, has closed. It is one of what the “gsclosing” blog covering GameStop reports to be 470 locations closing this month. And it follows what the entertainment website Polygon reported to be 590 store closings last year.

According to TimeOut magazine, GameStop peaked in 2015 with more than 6,000 global locations. By February 2024, its total number of locations had dropped by nearly a third, with 2,915 GameStop locations in the United States remaining as of January 2025.

GameStop has not given a specific final day for this Columbus closure but assured all impacted locations will be closed by the end of January, according to their SEC filing.

The store locator page on GameStop’s website shows the Peachtree Mall location is closed, but the stores at Columbus Park Crossing, 5555 Whittlesey Blvd., and Fort Benning, 9220 Marne Road, remain open.

A representative from GameStop did not respond to the Ledger-Enquirer’s request for comment; however, the company’s SEC filing indicates that several aspects led to the Columbus location’s closure.

“During fiscal 2024, we initiated a comprehensive store portfolio optimization review which involves identifying stores for closure based on many factors, including an evaluation of current market conditions and individual store performance, the company’s SEC filing reads. “This review, among other things, resulted in the closure of 590 stores in the United States in fiscal 2024. We anticipate closing a significant number of additional stores in fiscal 2025.”

The company’s fiscal year ends on January 31, 2026.

Customers can check the company’s store locator or reliable community lists such as gsclosing.blogspot.com for closure updates and to find the nearest operating stores.
