Hana Bank's World Cup-themed savings product offers up to 11% interest

SEOUL -- South Korea’s Hana Bank said Monday it launched a special savings product, which offers interest rates of up to 11% based on the performance of the country’s national team at the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

The Seoul-headquartered lender noted that the account carries a base annual interest of 2%, with customers eligible for bonus interest depending on how far South Korea advances in the tournament.

For example, clients will receive an extra 1.5 percentage points if South Korea makes it to the round of 32 and almost 9 percentage points if the team reaches the semifinals. As a result, the maximum yearly interest rate is set at 11%.

A total of 48 teams, including South Korea, will compete in the 2026 World Cup, which will kick off June 11 across 16 venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico for a month-long run.

Customers can deposit up to $135 per month over a six-month term through June 24. Four years ago, Hana Bank introduced a similar World Cup-themed product, which quickly sold out.

The bank said that the top rate of 11% was inspired by the number of players in a soccerl team’s starting lineup.

“Thanks to the strong demand, we have brought back this product so that Hana Bank and our customers can come together to support the Korean national football team,” Hana Bank said in a statement.

“We remain committed to introducing diverse products and services that bring joy to Korean football fans,” it added.

Hana Bank is not publicly listed. The share price of its parent company, Hana Financial Group, declined 1.04% on the Seoul bourse Monday.
