Aflac names J. Todd Daniels global chief risk officer

Columbus-based Aflac has named J. Todd Daniels executive vice president, global chief risk officer and chief actuary, reporting to Kriss Cloninger III, president of Aflac Inc.

In his role, Daniels is responsible for overseeing Aflac's actuarial function and for leading the development and implementation of all strategic and tactical global risk management programs and policies within Aflac Inc. That includes oversight of these functions performed to support the business activities of Aflac U.S., Aflac Japan and Aflac Global Investments.

Daniels joined Aflac in 2002 and has been promoted to positions of increasing responsibility within the firm’s Actuarial Department. He was promoted to vice president, financial planning and analysis in 2011, where he assumed responsibility for Aflac's financial planning and corporate modeling.In 2012, he was promoted to senior vice president, deputy corporate actuary, assuming the responsibilities of global chief risk officer in January 2014 and the additional role of chief actuary in November 2015.

Prior to joining Aflac, he worked as an actuary for Liberty National Life Insurance Company. Daniels earned a bachelor's degree in applied mathematics from Auburn University. He is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a member of the American Academy of Actuaries.

“Over the last 14 years, Todd has demonstrated his ability to work effectively with all segments of our insurance operations,” Kriss Cloninger, president of Aflac Inc., said in a statement. “His proven management skills and in-depth understanding of our insurance operations, combined with his thorough knowledge of risk management principles and practices in the industry, well position him to lead Aflac Incorporated's global risk and actuarial functions.”

Melanie Slaton named to Litigation Counsel of America

Atlanta-based law firm Hall Booth Smith said Melanie Slaton, partner with the HBS Columbus office, has been named to the Litigation Counsel of America. She will be joining Robert Shannon, a partner at HBS, in the counsel.

The Litigation Counsel of America is an invitation-only honorary society for trial lawyers and is limited to 3,500 fellows. The purpose of the society is to recognize deserving, experienced and highly qualified lawyers. Hall Booth Smith said it is “very proud” to have two of its attorney's be a part of such an honorary society that reflects its own goal of having “the highest commitment of excellence.”
