Columbus Regional, Aflac among ‘America’s Best Midsize Employers’

Yes, corporate lists and rankings are ubiquitous these days. But one that most companies or organizations would enjoy finding themselves on is “America’s Best Midsize Employers” by Forbes.

That’s where Columbus Regional Health has landed, coming in at No. 14 out of 250 employers across this great land. Supplemental health and life insurer Aflac and its famed duck are part of the rankings as well, but considerably down the list at No. 212.

That Aflac receives such an honor is no surprise. After all, it perpetually makes lists of everything from employee diversity to ethical operations to being one of the world’s most admired companies. Heck, in early March it was named to Fortune magazine’s list of the “100 Best Companies to Work For,” coming in at No. 50. That was its 18th straight appearance in those rankings.

Columbus Regional Health, on the other hand, has gone through difficult times in recent years, experiencing budget problems that led to some layoffs, forcing it to tighten its belt. Earlier this month, the health-care organization also said it is exploring the possibility of entering a “strategic affiliation or partnership with another health-care organization.”

The nonprofit company employs nearly 3,000 in Columbus, with its operations including Midtown Medical Center, Northside Hospital and John B. Amos Cancer Center.

The “America’s Best Midsize Employers” rankings stem from Forbes using a data or statistics firm called, naturally, Statista, to wade through results of surveys of more than 30,000 workers at firms employing between 1,000 and 5,000 people across the United States. The core question was if workers would recommend their employer to other prospects seeking a job, which bodes very well for Columbus Regional Health that its own staffers feel optimistic about the company and its future.

“Our staff is engaged in making Columbus Regional Health the health-care provider of choice in our region,” Columbus Regional Health President and Chief Executive Officer Scott Hill said in a statement. “We are committed to building a great place to work for our valued employees and a great place for our community to get the health care they need.”

Hill noted his organization received more than 30 national and industry-wide quality and patient safety honors in 2015. The “America’s Best Midsize Employers” list includes 19 hospitals and health-care systems from across the country.

With that, congratulations Columbus Regional Health and Aflac. Keep up the good work.
