Winn-Dixie barbecue sauce promotion generates scholarship donation to CVCC
The Winn-Dixie Foundation made a $5,000 donation to a scholarship fund at Chattahoochee Valley Community College on Friday.
Phenix City Mayor Eddie Lowe called the donation, which was announed at the Ladonia Winn-Dixie store, mission critical to the community.
“By doing this, they are investing in our community,” Lowe said. “I know they have been investing in this store, but this shows they are willing to invest in the most important things — our students.”
Central High School graduate Raven Rivers is one of the students who will benefit from the scholarship when she enrolls at CVCC in the fall to study nursing and emergency medicine.
“I want to thank God, the city of Phenix City and Winn-Dixie for giving me the opportunity to continue my education,” Rivers said.
CVCC Dean of Institutional Advancement and Effectiveness Joree D. Jones said the college is appreciative of the support.
“It is great to work with community partners such as Winn-Dixie to provide scholarships that will help students overcome a financial barrier to their education, and allow them to be successful in their career path,” Jones said. “We know that when our students achieve success, our community achieves success.”
The donation was tied to discounted Foy’s Bar-B-Q sauce, which is a Phenix City product. The sauce was sold for $1 a bottle with a purchase of $10 or more.
“Our Ladonia Winn-Dixie store continues to have a special connection with customers in this community,” said Drew Elkins, regional vice president for Winn-Dixie. “Our customers and associates in Phenix City are thrilled to be a part of the scholarship fund donation, and are thankful to Mayor Eddie Lowe for making this opportunity possible, that will directly benefit local students, friends and family at Chattahoochee Valley Community College.”
