Two new coronavirus deaths confirmed in Georgia, hospital reports

The first COVID-19 deaths in southwest Georgia have been reported to the state.

Wednesday morning, Phoebe Putney Health System in Albany received 14 test results, including 13 positives. Two of those patients, who were being cared for at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, have died.

Those patients are a 42-year-old woman and a 69-year-old woman who also had “existing medical conditions.” A hospital spokesperson could not provide any further information about them.

The hospital has had 23 positive results, with more than 330 individuals awaiting test results at home. Phoebe received 13 positive test results on Wednesday alone.

In total, three people have died from the virus in Georgia as of March 18.

The Georgia Department of Public Health on Wednesday confirmed 197 cases of COVID-19 in the state, up by 51 from Tuesday’s count.

Private and state labs have conducted a total of 1,508 COVID-19 tests as of March 18, state officials said.
