56 deaths, more than 1,600 coronavirus cases in Georgia. Here’s a breakdown by county.

The Georgia Department of Public Health at 7 p.m. Thursday confirmed 1,643 cases of COVID-19 in the state, up by 118 from the noon update.

Fifty-six people have now died from the novel coronavirus in Georgia. Eight new deaths were reported since noon on Thursday.

The Georgia Public Health Laboratory and private labs have conducted a total of 8,926 COVID-19 tests as of 7 p.m. March 26. The state has tested 1,646 people. Private labs have tested 7,280 state officials said.

The state health department reports 509 people have been hospitalized due to the virus.

State health officials have not provided a breakdown of the residents tested for COVID-19 in each county. The state is also not tracking the number of people who have recovered from COVID-19, state health officials previously said.

The state is reporting the counties for 166 of these cases as unknown. The county of a confirmed COVID-19 case is listed as “unknown” by the state if county data is not provided. The person may be homeless or medical professionals may not have entered the person’s county of residence into the state’s electronic database, health officials have previously said.
