Fort Benning restricts travel to stop virus spread

Maneuver Center of Excellence Commanding General Maj. Gen. Gary Brito put into place numerous restrictions preventing non-essential travel on and off base. The details include:

  • Military personnel residing on-post are restricted from leaving the installation, unless for healthcare needs, grocery shopping, essential postal, banking, laundry services and gas

  • Unit or large group activities are prohibited, but outdoor activities like running, biking and walking in groups of five or less are still allowed.

  • Military personnel residing off-post can only travel between their place of residence and Fort Benning to perform military or work related duties.

  • Service members living off post can travel to Fort Benning to use the Commissary, Post Exchange and other essential services, but no other activities are allowed.

SafeHouse Ministries opens up emergency shelter

SafeHouse Ministries on Hamilton Road has opened up their shelter for anybody needing refuge as the community deals with the COVID-19 outbreak. The shelter will operate from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m., according to a press release.

“Our community members experiencing homelessness are at a higher risk during this pandemic,” Pay Frey, executive director of Home for Good said in a press release. “Many already suffer from health issues that could only worsen their condition if they contract the virus.”

SafeHouse will provide a place for homeless individuals to sleep, as well as wash their hands and other hygiene measures that are designed to help spread the virus.
