Tax Commissioner’s Office lobby closed until further notice
The Muscogee County Tax Commissioner’s Office lobby will be closed to the public beginning April 6 until further notice to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19.
The office will continue to process transactions via mail and online. Columbus residents can go to dor.georgia.gov for more information about online services for motor vehicles and www.columbusga.org/taxcommissioner for property tax information. Georgia registrations expiring after March 16 have been extended through May 15.
Kemp issues shelter-in-place order
Citing data that showed Georgia needs more time to prepare for a surge of coronavirus cases and hospitalizations, Gov. Brian Kemp said he will issue a statewide shelter-in-place order during a press conference Wednesday.
The order is set to take effect Friday and expire April 13. Kemp also closed all K-12 schools in the state for the remainder of the school year. Classes will continue to take place online. Exact details of the shelter order were not given during the press conference, but the order will be published online and linked here once available.
Georgia reports more than 5,000 coronavirus cases
A month after the state reported its first two cases, the Georgia Department of Public Health at noon Thursday confirmed 5,348 cases of COVID-19 in the state, up by 600 from the last update at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Statewide, 163 people have now died from the novel coronavirus, an increase of nine confirmed deaths since Wednesday night’s report.
