Coronavirus live updates: Smiths Station issues a curfew, plus more news for April 6

Smiths Station enacts curfew

The city of Smiths Station in Lee County will impose a curfew beginning at 10 p.m. Monday until further notice to help limit the spread of novel coronavirus.

According to a city of Smiths Station Facebook post, the curfew will be in effect from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. EST daily. It will be enforced by the Lee County Sheriff’s Office.

The post states that employees of essential businesses who need to travel during those hours can request a letter from their employer for verification in the event they need it.

“The curfew is being implemented out of necessity due to the continuous social gatherings during evening and weekend hours,” the post reads. “This is for everyone’s safety.”

Lee County has one of the highest tallies of positive coronavirus cases in the state of Alabama, totaling 110 as of 10:30 a.m. Monday. The state as a whole is reporting 1,842 cases, with most of the cases centered around the Birmingham area.

On Friday, Alabama Governor Kay Ivey issued a statewide shelter-in-place order to limit the travel of citizens except for essential activities.

Harris County School District changes food distribution program

The Harris County School District’s School Nutrition Program will resume serving meals on Monday, April 6, 2020.

However, there are several changes to the pickup schedule and locations.

Easter takeout meal from The Fresh Market

The Fresh Market is offering an Easter take-home meal.

For as little as $7.00 a person, the complete meal serves 8 to 10 and includes:

  • Spiral sliced honey ham (9 lbs): Double-glazed, tender, hickory-smoked ham
  • Garden green beans (3 lbs): Fresh, simple and delicious to complement the richness of any holiday meal
  • White cheddar scalloped potatoes (3 lbs): Creamy scalloped potatoes served in a rich white cheddar sauce with green onions
  • Cored pineapple (1): Enjoy chilled alongside ham or try sprinkling rounds with The Fresh Market Chili Lime Rub and broil or grill until caramelized
  • Golden dinner rolls (12): Enough to use for leftover ham sandwiches
  • White layer cake (7-in): Double layer white cake topped with rich icing

The Easter meal is available for $69.99 and can be ordered in-store or online now through April 9 at 2 p.m. Orders can then be picked up in-store on April 10, 11 or 12.

Georgia reports more than 7,000 cases

The Georgia Department of Public Health at noon Monday confirmed 7,314 cases of COVID-19 in the state, up by 572 from the last update at 7 p.m. Sunday.

Statewide, 229 people have now died from the novel coronavirus, an increase of 10 confirmed deaths overnight.

Gates at some Columbus parks are closed. Are citizens still allowed to access them?

Neither a statewide shelter-in-place mandate from the governor nor a local order from the city mayor have closed Columbus parks, but residents may still see gates at many local parks locked for the foreseeable future.

That’s because the overarching message being sent by both entities is simply to stay at home.
