Fifth COVID-19 death confirmed in Muscogee County, coroner says

A fifth area resident has died from COVID-19, Muscogee County Coroner Buddy Bryan confirmed Sunday.

Bryan said a 63-year-old African-American man died at Piedmont Columbus Regional on Saturday.

The coroner said he had no further details on the death.

Others felled by the epidemic include a 22-year-old woman who died days after giving birth, and an 85-year-old man who marked the city’s first death.

Muscogee and its surrounding counties had reported 1,489 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus as of the noon Sunday update from Georgia’s Department of Public Health.

There are now 71 coronavirus-related deaths in the 18-county area.

Muscogee County reported 273 confirmed cases as of 12 p.m. Sunday.
