Skip the driver’s test? New GA drivers need to take it or they’ll lose their license

If new drivers in Georgia got to skip the in-person road test last month because of the coronavirus, they will need to make up for it by the deadline — or risk losing their license, WTVC reported

Gov. Brian Kemp signed an executive order in April that allowed new drivers to pass on the road test because of social distancing measures, according to 11 Alive. Now Kemp is issuing an order that updated the guidelines, WTOC reported.

New drivers between the ages of 16 and 18 who recently got their license will need to take the road test when the emergency order is lifted and no later than Sept. 30 in order to keep their license, according to the governor’s executive order..

Kemp says this was always the case but felt the need to clarify Tuesday at a press briefing, WTVC reported.

“We just wanted to clarify that. We had a lot of questions out there for that,” Kemp told 11 Alive.

Georgia’s Department of Driver’s Services says nearly 20,000 teens qualified to get their licenses in early May while the road tests were suspended, WTOC reported.
