Suspect in random attack on female UGA grads blames coronavirus stress, Athens cops say
Two women were seriously hurt in a random attack that a suspect blamed on stress from the coronavirus, Georgia officials say.
The women, who recently graduated from the University of Georgia, were leaving a store just before the “unprovoked” assaults on Sunday night, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department wrote in a Facebook post. The two were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, the post said.
Eric Keith Mitchell, 39, was found with a razor knife and arrested, according to police.
Mitchell “cited stress from COVID-19 concerns” as the cause of the attacks, officers wrote on Facebook.
He was taken to the Clarke County jail and charged with two counts each of aggravated battery and aggravated assault, according to police.
