Coronavirus live updates: How to get free food for students, more news for Wednesday

Free COVID-19 testing this Saturday

The Georgia Department of Public Health is offering free COVID-19 testing on May 30, from 9 a.m. to noon at Carver High School on 3100 8th Street.

Testing is open to Georgia residents only. For more info, call (706) 321-6300.

United Way, partners providing meals during Memorial Week

United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley and Feeding the Valley, along with a group of partners, are providing food over Memorial Week while Muscogee and Russell County school districts are closed.

Students can receive a Buddy Park, which includes two days’ worth of food, on Thursday. Students must be present to receive the food.

Muscogee County student meals will be provided 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the following sites:

  • 30th Avenue School
  • Baker Middle School
  • Carver High School
  • Chase Homes
  • Elizabeth Canty Apartments
  • J.D. Davis Elementary School
  • Jordan High School
  • Dawson Elementary School
  • Double Churches Middle School
  • Eagle Trace Apartments
  • Fox Elementary School
  • Kendrick High School
  • Key Elementary School
  • Midland Academy
  • Spencer High School
  • Warren Williams Apartments
  • Whisperwood Apartments
  • Wilson Apartments

Russell County student meals will be provided 11:00 a.m. to noon at the following sites:

  • Crawford Volunteer Fire Department
  • Mt. Olive Primary School
  • Hurtsboro City Hall
  • Pittsview Volunteer Fire Department

Partners involved include Greater Peace Baptist Church, St. Luke United Methodist Church, Boys & Girls Club, Girls Inc, Cascade Hills, Open Door, Salvation Army, Pierce Chapel, YMCA and Evangel Temple.

Some Columbus city workers will get time off for ‘hazardous duty’ during coronavirus

Some city employees will receive compensatory time off for working with the public during the coronavirus pandemic.

Columbus Council approved a resolution Tuesday that will provide 24 hours of “hazardous duty time off” to employees identified by their supervisor as having duties that required ongoing contact with the public daily or direct ongoing supervision of inmates during the period of March 14 to May 17.
