Georgia’s COVID-19 hospitalization numbers increase again as state reports 752 new cases

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported more than 53,200 COVID-19 cases in its 3 p.m. update Tuesday.

For the second straight day, current hospitalizations saw an increase in Georgia. Cases in Columbus’ Muscogee County have nearly doubled over the past month, while Middle Georgia sees only steady increases.

Here are other key takeaways:

  • Cases: 53,249 (+752 new cases in 24 hours).

  • Deaths: 2,285 (+77 deaths in 24 hours). That’s the highest number of newly reported deaths in a 24-hour period since May 21.

  • Current hospitalizations: 834. That’s an increase of 15 patients in 24 hours.
  • Tests: 657,068. This number includes 105,160 antibody tests and 551,908 viral tests. However, these totals do not account for tests that are not reported through the state’s electronic lab reporting system.

  • Columbus’ Muscogee County reported 868 cases Monday (+60 cases in 24 hours). From May 8 to June 8, Muscogee County’s confirmed COVID-19 cases have more than doubled, based on data analyzed by McClatchy. Today was the county’s largest single-day increase in confirmed cases.

  • Counties in Middle Georgia did not see large increases. There are 511 confirmed COVID-19 cases in Bibb County as of June 9.

  • Cases per person: Echols (3678.51), Randolph (2768.73), Terrell (2562.89), Early (2483.74) and Hancock (2441.11) counties have the highest number of coronavirus cases per person in the state.

  • The health department is not reporting how many Georgians have recovered.
