Georgia surpasses 60,000 total coronavirus cases Wednesday. Take a look at latest update

The Georgia Department of Public Health reported more than 60,000 cumulative COVID-19 cases in its 3 p.m. update Wednesday.

Here are some key takeaways:

  • Cases: 60,030 (+952 in 24 hours). The seven-day average for new coronavirus cases in Georgia is 864.29 cases per day. That’s the highest its been since April 13. McClatchy measures new cases by subtracting the total number of infections reported at 3 p.m. from the total number of infections reported the previous day at 3 p.m.
  • Georgia surpassed 50,000 cases on June 5.
  • Deaths: 2,575 (+46 deaths in 24 hours). It’s important to note that these numbers indicate when deaths are reported to the Georgia Department of Public Health. It does not reflect when these deaths occurred.

  • Tests: 763,149. This number includes 118,426 antibody tests and 644,723 viral tests (+15,450 new viral tests in 24 hours). Georgia reported just over 4,000 new viral tests Tuesday. These totals don’t account for tests that are not reported through the state’s electronic lab reporting system.

  • Current Hospitalizations: 881. That’s an increase of 6 patients in 24 hours. This count does not include patients who are being investigated for possible infections by health officials. The number of current hospitalizations also increased on Monday and Tuesday.
  • Cases per 100,000: Echols (4132.02), Chattahoochee (2828.17), Randolph (2827.95), Terrell (2598.32) and Early (2523.16) counties have the highest coronavirus rates per 100,000 people in the state.

  • The health department is not reporting how many Georgians have recovered.

Regional updates

  • Cases in the Columbus area continue to rise. Muscogee County reported 1,099 cases Wednesday (up 21 cases in 24 hours). As of June 17, 32 coronavirus-related deaths have been confirmed in Muscogee, an increase of three in 24 hours.

  • Chattahoochee County reported 304 COVID-19 cases Wednesday, an increase of 32 from Tuesday. There were only 39 confirmed infections there May 29, according to data from the Georgia Department of Public Health. Chattahoochee ranks in the top 2 for COVID-19 cases per 100,000 people in Georgia. No coronavirus-related deaths have been confirmed in Chattahoochee.
  • Bibb County reported 570 cases, up 10 cases from Tuesday. Houston County reported 470 cases, an increase of 14 cases.
  • Gwinnett County reports the highest number of cases in the state, at 5,658.
