COVID-19 numbers in the area for June 19
GEORGIA
Muscogee County and its surrounding areas reported a total of 4,385 coronavirus cases in the 3 p.m. Friday update from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
189 total deaths were reported in the area, an increase of four from yesterday’s update.

Georgia’s West-Central Health District covers 16 counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster.
Troup and Meriwether counties are not in the West-Central Health District but because of their proximity to Columbus, the Ledger-Enquirer will track those numbers as well.
ALABAMA
The number of novel coronavirus cases in Alabama has now reached 28,583 according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s dashboard at 3:30 p.m. EST Friday.
The number of reported cases in Lee County stands at 811 while Russell County’s total stands at 346.
There have been 330,906 tests performed statewide. The state reported 812 total COVID-19-related deaths as of Friday.
The state of Alabama now reports the number of presumed recoveries from COVID-19 on a weekly basis. On June 19, the state reported 15,974 presumed recoveries throughout Alabama.

Outbreak at Fort Benning caused county’s COVID-19 cases to surge, analysis finds
Recently confirmed COVID-19 infections at Fort Benning caused a surge in the total number of coronavirus cases for Chattahoochee County, a Ledger-Enquirer analysis found.
As of June 18, 305 COVID-19 cases have been confirmed in Chattahoochee County — a jump from only 39 recorded infections three weeks ago. That’s an increase of roughly 682%, and nearly half of the cases come from the post.
UGA sports teams get good news on next phases of summer workouts
Another sport takes another step toward normalcy after the NCAA Division I council passed legislation Wednesday night.
Men’s and women’s programs can begin required activities on July 20. The virtual and in-person activities cannot exceed more than eight hours per week, according to the NCAA.
Multiple sources told The Telegraph that Georgia women’s basketball players will return to campus Monday on a voluntary basis.
Where to get free COVID-19 test this weekend
The Columbus Health Department is offering free COVID-19 testing at the back parking lot on 11th Avenue and Center Street Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon.
Testing is for Georgia residents only.
