Phenix City assistant police chief dies while being treated for COVID-19
Phenix City Assistant Police Chief Gail Green-Gilliam died June 24 while being treated for COVID-19 in a Columbus hospital, Mayor Eddie Lowe told the Ledger-Enquirer.
Green served on the city’s police force for 33 years, and she was “an outstanding person with a lot of character and integrity,” Lowe said.
“She was a very good person,” he said. “She carried herself with dignity. ...You always got what you got. If I said something to her or wrote her a letter, I would say, ‘Thanks for always being you.’”
Phenix City Police Chief Ray Smith and the Muscogee County Coroner’s Office did not return messages.
Tuesday, the Phenix City Police Department announced the funeral arrangements.
Visitation for the public will be Wednesday, from 2-6 p.m. EDT, at Taylor Funeral Home. Social distancing and mask use will be practiced.
Due to coronavirus precautions, only Green’s family may attend the memorial service Thursday at 10 a.m. EDT in Franchise Missionary Baptist Church. But the public may watch the service streamed live on YouTube or on CTV Beam Cable Channel 7.
After the service, a procession will go from the church to Lakeview Memory Gardens, where a private ceremony will be conducted. The public may gather along the route:
From 10th Avenue and Dillingham Street to Broad Street, past the police department, then to 13th Street and Crawford Road, then to Opelika Road and 431 North, ending at the cemetery. Expect traffic delays between 10:30 a.m. and noon EDT along this route.
