Coronavirus in Columbus: Paws Humane closes after COVID-19 exposure, plus other news

COVID-19 case counts for the area

GEORGIA

Muscogee County and its surrounding areas reported a total of 6,118 cases in the 3 p.m. Thursday update from the Georgia Department of Public Health, an increase of 188 since Wednesday.

221 total deaths were reported in the area, an increase of four since yesterday.

Here’s a breakdown by county of total cases, deaths and hospitalizations:

  • Troup: 1516, 35, 158

  • Sumter: 562, 50, 151

  • Chattahoochee: 421, 0, 7

  • Harris: 341, 9, 41

  • Crisp: 276, 12, 45

  • Dooly: 210, 12, 43

  • Randolph: 200, 25, 36

  • Meriwether: 195, 3, 23

  • Stewart: 135, 3, 32

  • Macon: 118, 9, 36

  • Marion: 83, 2, 12

  • Talbot: 78, 3, 15

  • Clay: 56, 2, 5

  • Taylor: 29, 2, 10

  • Schley: 25, 1, 7

  • Webster: 23, 2, 6

  • Quitman: 17, 1, 5

Georgia’s West-Central Health District covers 16 counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster.

Troup and Meriwether counties are not in the West-Central Health District but because of their proximity to Columbus, the Ledger-Enquirer will track those numbers as well.

ALABAMA

The number of novel coronavirus cases in Alabama has now reached 39,604 according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s dashboard at 4:15 p.m. EST Thursday.

The number of reported cases in Lee County stands at 1,245 while Russell County’s total stands at 503.

There have been 419,221 tests performed statewide. The state reported 961 total COVID-19-related deaths as of Wednesday.

The state of Alabama reports the number of presumed recoveries from COVID-19 on a weekly basis. On July 2, the state reported 22,082 presumed recoveries throughout Alabama.

Paws Humane closes adoption center, veterinary clinic

Paws Humane Society has temporarily closed its adoption center and veterinary clinic due to exposure with a person who tested positive for COVID-19, according to the organization’s Facebook.

“We will be taking this time to deep clean and ensure all exposed team members are tested. We will not reopen until we have an all clear. Please keep an eye on our social media for updates on when we feel it is safe and responsible to open,” the Facebook post read.

MCSD football teams prepare for first summer workouts

Public school football teams in Muscogee County are gearing up for the return of high school sports activities to MCSD next week.

Spirits are high within Muscogee County School District teams, who have yet to start summer workouts. The Georgia High School Association allowed teams to begin training in early June.
