COVID-19 numbers in our area for July 7
GEORGIA
Muscogee County and its surrounding areas reported a total of 6,857 cases in the 3 p.m. Tuesday update from the Georgia Department of Public Health. This is an increase of 110 cases since Monday.
228 total deaths were reported in the area, an increase of three overnight.

Georgia’s West-Central Health District covers 16 counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster.
Troup and Meriwether counties are not in the West-Central Health District but because of their proximity to Columbus, the Ledger-Enquirer will track those numbers as well.
ALABAMA
The number of novel coronavirus cases in Alabama has now reached 45,263 according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s dashboard at 3:30 p.m. EST Tuesday.
The number of reported cases in Lee County stands at 1,433 while Russell County’s total stands at 568.
There have been 460,842 tests performed statewide. The state reported 1,007 total COVID-19-related deaths as of Tuesday.
The state of Alabama reports the number of presumed recoveries from COVID-19 on a weekly basis. On July 7, the state reported 22,082 presumed recoveries throughout Alabama.

Free COVID-19 testing this Saturday
The Georgia Department of Public Health is once again offering free COVID-19 testing to Georgia residents this Saturday.
Testing will take place at Springfield Baptist Church on 211 Seldon Street in Waverly Hall from 9 a.m. to noon.

Face coverings now required at Troup County Government Center
Due to the recent increase in COVID-19 cases in Troup County, the county has mandated the use of protective face coverings for all visitors at the Troup County Government Center, effective Wednesday.
Anyone who must visit for permitted in-person services will be required to wear face masks and practice social distancing while inside the building.
In addition, all visitors who enter the building will be screened immediately by county personnel which includes being asked to answer health-related questions and a temperature check. All visitors will be subject to denial of entry based on responses to the questions and/or temperature.
MCSD proposes property tax increase due to COVID-19 losses
There are three public hearings scheduled this month for residents to learn more about the proposal.
Will Columbus require masks to prevent COVID-19 spread?
Cities and states around the country are moving to require face masks in public spaces to help to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Columbus won’t be one of them.
Mayor Skip Henderson says at this time, the city does not have plans to require mask-wearing in public.
