Coronavirus in Columbus: HBCU classic canceled, plus more news on July 10

COVID-19 numbers in our area for July 10
GEORGIA
Muscogee County and its surrounding areas reported a total of 7,517 cases in the 3 p.m. Thursday update from the Georgia Department of Public Health. This is an increase of 294 cases since Thursday.
235 total deaths were reported in the area, an increase of three overnight.

Georgia’s West-Central Health District covers 16 counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster.
Troup and Meriwether counties are not in the West-Central Health District but because of their proximity to Columbus, the Ledger-Enquirer will track those numbers as well.
ALABAMA
The number of novel coronavirus cases in Alabama has now reached 49,892 according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s dashboard at 3:30 p.m. EST Friday.
The number of reported cases in Lee County stands at 1,535 while Russell County’s total stands at 665.
There have been 491,600 tests performed statewide. The state reported 1,077 total COVID-19-related deaths as of Friday.
The state of Alabama reports the number of presumed recoveries from COVID-19 on a weekly basis. On July 10, the state reported 25,783 presumed recoveries throughout Alabama.

Fountain City Classic will not be played in 2020
The SIAC canceled fall sports Thursday, meaning the Fountain City Classic won’t be played this fall.
The decision, the SIAC said in a release, was primarily predicated on the “overarching concern shared by all SIAC member institutions with regard to the health and safety of our student-athletes, coaches, students, staff, fans and other campus stakeholders.”
CSU’s summer enrollment soars despite COVID-19
Although classes are conducted only online due to the coronavirus pandemic, Columbus State University reported its highest summer enrollment in nearly a decade.
CSU had 3,967 students enrolled for the summer 2020 semester as of June 26, the most since 2011, according to the university.
