Georgia’s coronavirus case totals update each day at 3 p.m.
Here are the updated COVID-19 numbers for our area:
GEORGIA
Muscogee County and its surrounding areas reported a total of 11,841 cases in the 3 p.m. Wednesday update from the Georgia Department of Public Health.
344 total deaths were reported in the area.

Georgia’s West-Central Health District covers 16 counties: Chattahoochee, Clay, Crisp, Dooly, Harris, Macon, Marion, Muscogee, Quitman, Randolph, Schley, Stewart, Sumter, Talbot, Taylor and Webster.
Troup and Meriwether counties are not in the West-Central Health District but because of their proximity to Columbus, the Ledger-Enquirer will track those numbers as well.
ALABAMA
The number of novel coronavirus cases in Alabama has now reached 100,801 according to the Alabama Department of Public Health’s dashboard at 3:30 p.m. EST Wednesday.
The number of reported cases in Lee County stands at 2,724 while Russell County’s total stands at 1,391.
There have been 785,889 tests performed statewide. The state reported 1,814 total COVID-19-related deaths as of Wednesday.
The state of Alabama reports the number of presumed recoveries from COVID-19 on a weekly basis. On Aug. 12, the state reported 41,523 presumed recoveries throughout Alabama.

Columbus businesses, nonprofits can now apply for COVID-19 aid funds. Here are the details
Columbus businesses and organizations have from now until August 24 to submit applications to receive coronavirus response grant monies through the city’s share of CARES Act funding.
The $2 trillion Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act was passed by Congress in March and was designed to provide economic relief to Americans due to the impacts of COVID-19.
Columbus is due to receive a total of $10.2 million to be allocated to the consolidated government in the first phase of funding. The city will receive $34 million overall.
COVID-19 has exposed ‘depth of need’ around Columbus area
A record number of churches partnered together this past weekend to feed hungry residents in the Chattahoochee Valley as the coronavirus pandemic continues to exacerbate food insecurity.
Five hundred of boxes of food were given to those in need Saturday as part of a partnership between 14 churches in the Columbus area. The drive-thru giveaway aimed to provide relief for those who are experiencing food insecurity during the coronavirus pandemic.
Georgia reports record number of COVID-19-related deaths
The Georgia Department of Public Health reported 222,588 cumulative COVID-19 cases Tuesday, up by over 3,500 new cases in 24 hours.
Georgia reported +122 deaths in 24 hours, the largest single-day increase in reported coronavirus-related deaths since the start of the pandemic. The previous high was 92.
It’s important to note that these numbers indicate when deaths are reported to the Georgia Department of Public Health. It does not reflect when these deaths occurred.
