Columbus movie theaters will start reopening soon. What to know about COVID-19 precautions

Several Columbus-area AMC movie theaters will be reopening next week after closing earlier this year due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The first area theater to reopen will be the AMC CLASSIC Columbus Park 15 at 5556 Whittlesey Blvd. on August 20. On reopening day, movie tickets will be $0.15 (plus sales tax), according to a press release, as a celebration of AMC’s 100th anniversary.

The AMC CLASSIC Tiger 13 in Opelika and the AMC CLASSIC Ritz 13 in Columbus will reopen on August 27.

The last batch of theaters reopening in the area will be on Sept. 3. Those locations include:

  • AMC CLASSIC Peachtree 8, 3131 Manchester Expressway.
  • AMC CLASSIC Auburn 14, 2130 East University Drive.
  • AMC CLASSIC LaGrange 10, 201 Main St.

According to AMC’s web page dedicated to reopening, a number of safety measures will be implemented to keep patrons safe. Masks are required inside all movie theaters, unless visitors are eating or drinking, and are available to purchase for $1 if an individual needs one.

Other safety measures include:

  • Upgraded air filters.
  • Vacuuming carpeted areas every night.
  • Offering hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes throughout the theater.

There will also be a limited number of people in each auditorium, according to the website. At AMC CLASSIC locations, auditoriums will only be filled at 30% capacity or less.

Movie theaters will also serve a limited menu until it’s safe to expand. Condiments, lids, straws and other items are available only by request and refills are discontinued until further notice.

Here are the current CDC guidelines for individuals that want to go see a movie in theaters:

  • Wash hands often.
  • Avoid close contact.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a mask.
  • Cover coughs and sneezes.
  • Use contactless payment options when available.
