Congressman Sanford D. Bishop, Jr., a Democrat who represents Georgia’s 2nd Congressional District, responded to the shooting Wednesday at a congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Virginia, saying he was “deeply saddened by this senseless shooting.”

Multiple individuals were injured in the shooting, including Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana, a congressional aide, and Capitol Police officers.

“It is a direct attack on our democratic values,” Bishop said in a press release. “My thoughts are with those that were injured and their families, and I pray for a full and swift recovery for all that were impacted by this tragedy.”

“Furthermore, I want to recognize and thank the Capitol Police officers on the scene. Their heroism prevented further injury or loss of life, and for that we are in their debt.”
