1. ‘Tamir gone. They shot my daddy.’ Pregnant woman says man killed in front of 3 kids: Brittany Moody was trembling with tears in her eyes Wednesday afternoon as she described the moment the father of her children was killed on Fourth Avenue in front of his three children. “The only thing I could do was close my eyes and scream,” said Moody, who is four months pregnant with one of Tamir Harris’ 12 children. “He shot him in my face.”
2. Two correctional officers charged with cruelty to children, violation of oath: Two correctional officers for the Georgia Department of Juvenile Justice in Midland face felony charges after their arrests on Friday. The officers were identified as Johnny Walton, 30, and Marquis Joaquell Taylor, 31, both of Columbus . Taylor was taken into custody at 2:45 p.m. on Decatur Street and charged with one count of cruelty to children second degree, failure to report suspected child abuse and violation of oath.
3. Ledger-Enquirer’s 2017 Dandy Dozen squad announced: For Glenwood wide receiver Cameron O’Neil, Aug. 12 was the realization of something the star senior has been working toward for quite some time. O’Neil recalled growing up in Smiths Station and seeing the older Panthers make The Ledger-Enquirer’s Dandy Dozen, the preseason list of the area’s top 12 players.
4. 2 former Columbus Regional employees sentenced in scheme that netted $908,938: Two former employees for Columbus Regional Health were sentenced Tuesday in U.S. District Court on wire fraud and tax evasion charges in a scheme that netted a total of $908,935. Carol Adcock, former accounts payable manager, and Barbara McFerrin, director of corporate finance, were sentenced Tuesday by Judge Clay Land. Adcock was sentenced to 15 months in prison and ordered to make restitution of $246,830. McFerrin was sentenced to 33 months in prison on the same charges and ordered to pay restitution of $662,105.
5. Three homicides in three days. ‘We are tired of this happening in our community’: After the third homicide in three days in Columbus, a crowd spilled into the street on Fourth Avenue Tuesday before a police standoff ended with a suspect in custody. Tamir Harris, 33, of Columbus was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:06 a.m. near 35th Street, said Muscogee County Deputy Coroner Charles Newton. His body will be transported to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation crime lab in Decatur for an autopsy.
