Georgia insurance commissioner Ralph Hudgens assured residents that his office was standing ready to assist with any and all insurance claims arising from Hurricane Irma.

“Policyholders can contact my Consumer Services Division toll-free at 1-800-656-2298,” Hudgens said. “Also, if severe weather should cause significant damage in Georgia, I plan to send claims experts to the affected areas for face-to-face consultations.”

Hudgens recommended that property owners take the time to make copies of their policies and their agent’s contact information. He also recommended taking an inventory of personal belongings and planning to keep those documents handy in case they are forced to leave their home.

“The Department expects insurers to settle claims in a timely manner, and work closely with the Department to help individuals affected by this natural disaster,” said Deputy Commissioner Jay Florence.

The commissioner’s office said property owners should remember to secure your property as best as possible, contact an insurance agent immediately if you’ve had damage to a house or car, drive with caution during severe weather and to know your home homeowner’s insurance policy, especially as it relates to flooding and water damage.

For more information, the commissioner’s office can be reached at 404-656-2070 or 1-800-656-2298.
