Many people in the Columbus Historic District and parts of downtown woke up to a strong natural gas odor Tuesday morning.

It’s nothing to be concerned about, said Harold Woods, director of operations for Liberty Utilities.

“We have gotten quite a large number of calls and we investigated it thoroughly,” Woods said.

What Liberty discovered was the smell was coming from the Brickyard Road area in Phenix City and was being blown into Columbus by south and southwesterly winds.

Natural gas is colorless and odorless, but utilities add a smell to it that allows for detection.

“Through our investigation, we never detected natural gas,” Woods said. “We only detected the odor.”

Natural gas in Phenix City is provided by Alagasco and that company was aware of the issue.

“This was never a hazardous situation,” Wood said.
