What are gas prices like in Columbus after Hurricane Nate?
Gas prices around Columbus rose Monday as oil refineries assessed their facilities after Hurricane Nate moved through the Gulf over the weekend.
The lowest reported price on Monday morning, according to the Gas Buddy app, is at the Raceway gas station on Victory Drive near I-185. Regular gas was reported as $2.24 per gallon.
The most expensive station is the M&P Foodmart at St. Mary’s Road where regular gas was reportedly $2.68 per gallon.
Many stations in the area ranged from $2.45 to $2.49 per gallon, including those off of Veterans Parkway and Warm Springs Road.
Drivers looking for a slightly better deal can drive across the river to Phenix City where gas is up to 11 cents cheaper than the cheapest gas in Columbus.
Only 2 miles outside of downtown Columbus, the Circle K on US-80 and Auburn Rd. is selling regular gas for $2.13 per gallon.
The Crown and Sunoco gas stations off of 13th Street are both selling regular gas for $2.15 per gallon.
AAA reported Monday morning a national average of $2.49 per gallon. Georgia came in at a slightly higher average price of $2.50 per gallon, and Columbus at $2.47. A year ago, the average in Columbus was $2.20 per gallon.
Alabama currently sits at an average of $2.32 per gallon. A year ago, the average was $2.09.
Reuters reported Sunday afternoon refineries, including Phillips 66 and Valero, were assessing any possible damages from Nate before resuming production.
BP announced Thursday it would stop all oil and gas production in the region and evacuate personnel from its four platforms. The Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement estimates it has paused production of about 1.6 million barrels of oil per day in the Gulf of Mexico, or about 92 percent of its typical output.
