Inmate dies after suffering from apparent medical condition in Lee County Jail

A 28-year-old inmate died early Friday after suffering from an apparent medical condition in the Lee County Jail, authorities said.

The inmate, whose name has yet to be released, was pronounced dead at the East Alabama Medical Center. Officials said there appears to be no signs of foul play.

Correctional officers with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office were called to a medical situation around 8:40 a.m. CST Friday involving a inmate inside of a cell block. They found him suffering from what appeared to be a medical condition, according to a news release.

One of the correctional officers called an on-duty doctor and nurse. They responded to the scene and recommended that the inmate be taken to the hospital.

He was rushed to the booking area where authorities said his condition declined rapidly, prompting correctional officers and medical personnel to try to resuscitate him. He was rushed to the East Alabama Medical Center, where Lee County Coroner Bill Harris pronounced him dead.

Sheriff Jay Jones has requested that the State Bureau of Investigation investigate the incident.
