1. Two people arrested after $4.1 million in meth, heroin found: An eight-month investigation by ICE Homeland Security Investigations and the Muscogee County Sheriff’s Office has led to the seizure of $4.1 million worth of methamphetamine and heroin in Columbus and the arrest of two suspects in what is believed to be the largest bust of the drugs in Columbus, Sheriff Donna Tompkins said Wednesday. The suspects were identified as Anayanssy Espinosa, 42, and her husband, Ezequiel Rangel-Barajas, 33, also known as Jose Hernandez. Both were arrested during a Nov. 29 search at 1232 Alta Vista Drive, the sheriff said.
2. Gus Malzahn addresses Arkansas head coaching rumors: After Auburn’s 28-7 loss to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn addressed the elephant in the room. Or, maybe more fittingly, the Razorback in the room. Malzahn fielded questions regarding rumors that he will leave Auburn to become the Arkansas head coach. “I'm happy at Auburn,” Malzahn said. “We have great players. I love my players.”
3. Tenant found for half of downtown Columbus Carmike building: About seven months after acquiring the former Carmike Cinemas corporate headquarters in downtown Columbus, developer Will White has found a tenant for nearly half the building. Hall Booth Smith PC, a law firm that has offices throughout the Southeast, including Columbus, has leased part of the ground floor and all of the third and fourth floors of the five-story building at the corner of 13th Street and First Avenue, White said.
4. More than $202,000 worth of meth seized outside O’Charley’s: An informant’s tip led the Special Operations Unit to the parking lot of O'Charley's Restaurant & Bar where agents seized 4.4 pounds of metamphetamine valued at $202,000 and $13,518 in cash on Tuesday at 1528 Bradley Park Drive, a Columbus police officer testified Thursday in Recorder's Court.
5. ‘Good morning neighborhood’: UGA fan goes viral after loud message to Auburn family: University of Georgia fans woke up Sunday morning with a sense of pride, accomplishment and excitement. But one UGA fan decided to make his excitement heard across his whole neighborhood. In a video posted to Facebook by Kathy Cheatham Gloer, her husband Jon Gloer is seen standing outside their home around 8 a.m. Sunday with a microphone and speaker.
