Coroner names man killed in Phenix City wreck

The man killed Sunday morning in a Phenix City wreck on Highway 280 was identified as 34-year-old Derrick Slocum, Arthur Sumbry Jr. said.

Slocum of Salem, Ala. was pronounced dead on the scene at 11:25 a.m. of blunt-force trauma to the head and body. His body was transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Montgomery for an autopsy.

Sumbry said he was called to the single-vehicle wreck around 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

He said Slocum was driving a gray 1998 Chevy Tahoe when the vehicle left the roadway and landed in ditch off of Highway 280 near Wal-Mart. No further details have been released.

Phenix City police continue to investigate the crash.
