There’s a new, easier way to get a digital subscription — and it’s all through Google

It’s now easier than ever to follow the local news reporters who are out on the street telling the story of Columbus and the Chattahoochee Valley.

On April 24, McClatchy, the parent company of the Ledger-Enquirer, launched a new tool called Subscribe with Google that aims to make adding a digital subscription as simple as tapping a button.

Here’s how it works:

If you’re not a digital or print subscriber, you’re going to hit a paywall after reading a certain number of online articles a month. That paywall stops you from reading any more stories until either the month is over or you buy a subscription.

Before Subscribe with Google, you’d have to put in your information, create password, save a credit card, and you’d need to sign in again every time you switched devices. You can still do that, but now there’s another way. If you choose “Subscribe with Google,” it’s as simple as a few quick clicks and you’re done - and it’s all managed through your Google account.

Using Subscribe with Google also comes with another perk: if something newsworthy is going on, and you decide to do a Google search for that topic, Google will pull stories from the Ledger-Enquirer to the top of the list.

That means you don’t have to worry about running into any other paywalls from other news organizations - you’ll have your news brought right to you from the subscription you’ve already paid for.

“We’re grateful to work with Google as an early development partner and excited to see how our collaboration will help McClatchy’s brand of independent local journalism reach a wider audience,” said Craig Forman, president and CEO of McClatchy in a news release. “The importance of local news is gaining wider recognition and we know first-hand the deep impact it can have in changing lives, improving communities and strengthening our democracy.”
