A man died Friday after having an apparent heart attack while shopping at the Walmart on U.S. 280 in Phenix City, authorities said.

The death during Black Friday shopping was a sad note to the holiday season, with witnesses on Facebook expressing their condolences.

Russell County Coroner Arthur Sumbry said Teddy Venable, 71, had a history of heart problems. He was pronounced dead at 3:32 p.m. at the Jack Hughston Memorial Hospital in Phenix City.

Some on social media said Venable had been shopping for children’s toys, but Sumbry said he could not confirm that.

Because of Venable’s medical history, no autopsy will be necessary, Sumbry said.
