Phenix City police charge suspect with murder in Christmas night fatal shooting

The Phenix City Police Department, in cooperation with the U.S. Marshal’s Service, arrested Delewis Antwan Collier on a murder charge Wednesday night in the Christmas night shooting death of Sidney Jones.

Collier is being held in the Russell County jail pending his preliminary hearing, Phenix City police Capt. Darryl Williams said in a news release Thursday.

This case, however, remains open, he said. Anyone with information about the shooting should call the police at 334-448-2841 or 334-448-2840.

Jones, 36, of Smiths Station, was the 20th Russell County homicide in 2019, coroner Arthur Sumbry Jr. told the Ledger-Enquirer last week.

According to last week’s news release, police responded at 11:36 p.m. Dec. 25 to a shooting at AJ’s Bar and Grill.

Officers found a male, later identified as Jones, with what appeared to be multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at Piedmont Columbus Regional’s midtown hospital.

Collier, 37, was wanted for questioning since the homicide was announced.
